TSUNAMI DEATH TOLL RISES TO 57,000

As more bodies washed ashore from the tragic tsunami in Southeast Asia, the death toll rose to 57,000, but tens of thousands are still missing. The New York Times states that an estimated one third of all casualties are children. If you would like to help, you can make a donation here.

Indonesian television has shown images of bulldozers scooing bodies into makeshift watery graves. Workers passed out from the stench. They have also shown the images of children laying dead.

A US photoblogger living in Indonesia writes
I'm truly sorry if this image offends you, however, I do feel strongly that the major media networks have a way of "toning down" the truth in tragedies like this. THIS is what we truly see living here in Indonesia. These are the photographs that flash before our eyes and haunt our dreams.

That image is posted on Flickr by javajive. I don't feel the need to post it here, but as he is so close to the tragedy, I understand how he must feel and why he feels it necessary to document the horrors of this disaster.

Hundreds of thousands of people are homeless and without clean drinking water. An estimated 18-20,000 tourists are attempting to leave Sri Lanka. At least they have a place to go that they call home.
